I also played XCOM 2 before I played Phoenix Point Year One Edition. Just enable them and you'll be fine, just remember you'll lose your first contact with the DLC stuff so save beforehand if you don't want to restart the campaign. Honestly the festering skies new mechanics seems hard but I've never played it, and the legacy of the ancient new mission types and resource production isn't that intuitive to work out on first playthrough.

Living weapons is a minor DLC which adds 3 new weapons, 2 of which are good plus an armour set which is also good. I don't have #3 and #5 (not out yet) enabled and I enjoy the game as it is.
